Glossary of Internet Terms and Definitions for online marketing

AdWords – Google AdWords has been a popular mean of marketing one’s business through advertisement on Google. AdWords are the ads containing the keywords that users search on Google. These ads are seen on the right side or on top of related search results. It is widely used to enhance one’s website traffic. With Google AdWords, you only pay when someone clicks on your ad.

Aggregator – An aggregator is computer software which is used to aggregate a particular kind of information from various online sources. It can be used to aggregate data, news, videos, polls, reviews and searches etc. Software which is used to fetch, filter and organize a particular search from different search engines is called search software.

Algorithm – An algorithm is a bit by bit process of solving any problem. In case of Search Engine Marketing, it is a distinct set of information and measure which is utilized by search engines in order to run them to improve the rank of websites related to searches having definite keywords.

Anchor Text –An anchor text means a word or words that form a link. If you want your site to rank well then getting only links won’t do. You will have to place anchor text of high quality (often with the keyword or key phrase you want to rank for) in the links in order to improve the ranking of your sites. Be sure to vary the anchor text so that they look natural. If every link looks the same, Google and the other search engines could penalize you for that.

Areas Served – An Areas served are the places such as countries, states, districts, cities and towns where a particular service has been provided. These are determined on the basis of the business performed with the clients.

Article submissions-Submitting articles have been a popular method and probably one the oldest way of link building in the SEO industry. Each day loads of articles are being submitted to article directories. Being a professional you will need to create back links to your website. In the past it was nearly impossible to boost the ranking of your website without submitting articles with a link back to your website to article directories.  However with Google’s Penguin new view on links, building backlinks through article submission may no longer have the same SEO power it once had. Citation– What are Citations? This is one among the frequently raised questions by the user over the internet. Citations enable us to obtain top rank among the local search results. It is nothing but the details of your business. It includes Name of your business, the Address and the Phone number. In short a citation is also termed as NAP. Claim – as a local business owner you want to claim your business on Google and other search engines. When you claim your business you have the opportunity to verify, edit and add to the existing information on Google and the other search engines. Conversion – A conversion determines the success of any business in local SEO over the internet. It is determined by measuring number of visitors undergoing the due course of action. Suppose if 100 user visits your site but only 10 out of them performed the requisite action, then the conversion rate for that page will be only 10 percent. Crawl – In case of SEO (search engine optimization), crawl is set of action that acts as an automatic navigator of any search engine when you search for related websites over the internet. It is an action performed by the search engines to find out the sites which contain most relevant content related to a particular keyword.

Custom Category (in Google Places) -A Custom Category in Google Places is a field in which owner of any business is enabled to feed his categorization of his business. It tells us about the business, what it is all about.

Custom Field (in Google Places) – A custom field in Google Places is a user defined field. It is utilized for customizing the needs of any organization in order to meet the requirements. It can be used to address particular set of audience for a specific purpose.

Directory – A directory is a storage system which is used to store files or documents. Link directories are used to identify particular directory related to the content of the site.

Directory- AKA- Web Directory– A Web directory can be similar to a phone book in that it is organized by subject. There are also directories that are for a specific niche, such as health, business, vegetarian, HTML5, churches, etc.   Unlike search engines that are maintained by software, Web Directories are usually done by humans with submissions being done manually.
